UK Organic Exporters Gain Easier Access to Japan’s £1.4bn Market

Japan Flag

The UK government has announced improved access to Japan’s £1.4 billion organic food market, creating new opportunities for British producers of organic meat, dairy and related products.

From 1 April 2026, the UK and Japan will now recognise each other’s organic livestock standards as equivalent, meaning UK exporters can sell eligible products into Japan using a single organic certification.

This removes a layer of paperwork that previously made exporting more complex and helps UK producers reach one of Asia’s largest and growing organic markets.

What products are included?

The agreement covers a wide range of organic goods, including:

  • Organic beef, lamb, pork and poultry
  •  Dairy products such as cheese, butter and yoghurt
  •  Processed products such as sausages and cured meats
  •  Other products containing organic animal ingredients, including pet food

Japan is currently the second largest organic market in Asia, with demand continuing to grow as consumers increasingly look for premium and sustainably produced food.

What this means for exporters

For UK food producers, this could make exporting to Japan more straightforward and more commercially viable.

As new opportunities open up, businesses may need to consider:

  • Export documentation and certification requirements
  • Transit times and routing to Japan
  •  Temperature-controlled transport for perishable goods
  •  Coordinating supply chains to support longer-distance shipping
