Businesses with cargo moving through Taiwan and East China are being advised to monitor upcoming shipments as Typhoon Saudel approaches the region.
Typhoon Saudel is currently moving towards southern Japan and northern Taiwan, bringing the risk of strong winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous sea conditions across parts of East Asia.
As of Tuesday 25 August, Saudel remains a typhoon and is expected to pass to the north of Taiwan later this week. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration expects its effects to bring periods of heavy rain, strong winds and high seas to northern parts of the island, although the storm is forecast to gradually weaken as it continues west.
Saudel is then forecast to move towards China’s southeastern coast, with Fujian province currently expected to be affected between late Thursday and early Friday.
Where is Typhoon Saudel Heading?
Current forecasts indicate that Saudel is likely to pass over waters north of Taiwan rather than make direct landfall on the island.
Northern Taiwan could still experience heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas from Thursday into Friday as the storm passes nearby.
The storm is then forecast to continue west towards China’s Fujian province.
Marine conditions are also expected to deteriorate across parts of the East China Sea, creating potential disruption for vessels operating in affected waters.
As with any tropical weather system, Saudel’s exact track, strength and potential impact remain subject to change.
How Could This Affect Freight?
Severe weather can affect freight operations even when ports remain open.
Businesses with cargo moving through Taiwan or China’s eastern and southeastern coastal regions should be prepared for potential:
- Vessel delays and schedule changes
- Temporary port or terminal restrictions
- Changes to vessel berthing and departure times
- Disruption to container collections and deliveries
- Trucking delays caused by heavy rainfall or flooding
- Knock-on delays as shipping schedules recover following the storm
At the time of writing, we have not seen confirmation of widespread closures at major container ports potentially affected by Saudel.
However, port and terminal restrictions can be introduced at short notice when strong winds, high waves or other unsafe operating conditions develop.
Further Weather Disruption Across China
Saudel is approaching while parts of southern China are already dealing with severe flooding following Typhoon Narra.
More than 54,000 people have been relocated in Guangxi, according to Chinese state television figures reported by Reuters, with homes and businesses affected by rising floodwater.
Narra has remained over the Beibu Gulf, also known as the Gulf of Tonkin, bringing prolonged heavy rainfall to Guangxi and neighbouring areas including Hainan and Guangdong.
Further heavy rainfall has been forecast across parts of southern China, including Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and Fujian.
Although this disruption is separate from Typhoon Saudel, the combination of existing flooding and another approaching tropical system creates additional uncertainty for road transport, factories and other parts of the supply chain across affected regions.
Monitor Upcoming Shipments
Businesses with cargo moving through Taiwan, Fujian or other potentially affected areas of East and southern China should keep a close eye on upcoming shipments and allow additional flexibility around planned departure and arrival dates.
Weather conditions and forecasts can change quickly, and individual ports, terminals, carriers and transport providers may introduce operational restrictions at short notice.
