Typhoon Bavi Continues to Impact Chinese Port Operations

Businesses importing goods from China may continue to experience shipping disruption following the impact of Typhoon Bavi, which affected several major ports across Eastern China.

Although key ports have now resumed operations, vessel backlogs and terminal congestion continue to affect shipping schedules as ports work through accumulated cargo.

Current Situation

Typhoon Bavi temporarily disrupted operations at several major Chinese ports, including Shanghai, Ningbo and Zhoushan, impacting vessel movements and cargo handling.

While port operations have largely resumed, congestion remains, and some shipping services continue to experience delays as carriers recover their schedules.

Current conditions include:

  • Vessel delays caused by ships waiting at anchorage or being diverted to alternative ports.
  • Many shipments currently experiencing delays of around 2–5 days, although some services may be affected for longer depending on the shipping line and port.
  • Continued port congestion as terminals process accumulated cargo.
  • Localised disruption to inland rail, road and barge services in some areas.
