Import Checks on EU Fruit and Vegetables Delayed Until 2027

Fruit and Vegetables

The UK Government has announced that physical and identity checks on medium-risk fruit and vegetable imports from the EU, originally due to start on 1 July 2025, will now be postponed until 31 January 2027.

This move supports ongoing negotiations for a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement with the EU, which aims to reduce trade barriers, cut costs, and ease pressure on food prices. The new deal is expected to eliminate routine SPS checks on food imports and exports between the UK and EU.

For now, businesses can continue importing medium-risk products like tomatoes, grapes, and peppers from the EU without physical checks or added fees. Documentary checks will still apply, and current BTOM requirements remain in force.

The government says this delay will give businesses more time to prepare, while ensuring essential goods continue to flow smoothly across borders.
