Empty Container Restrictions at London Gateway and Southampton Ports

Container Truck

Businesses moving containers through DP World London Gateway or Southampton ports should be aware of restrictions on empty container returns, as high yard occupancy puts pressure on terminal capacity.

The notices received outline different measures at each port. These could affect haulage arrangements, particularly where an empty container needs to be returned after delivery.

London Gateway: Empty Container Returns Suspended

Empty container receivals at London Gateway have been suspended from 12 noon on Monday 2 November 2026 until further notice, following a notice advising that the terminal has reached critical capacity levels.

Shipping lines should be contacted to confirm alternative empty container return locations before transport arrangements are finalised.

Southampton: Shipping Line Caps on Empty Returns

At DP World Southampton, empty container receivals will be subject to shipping line operational caps from 12 noon on Tuesday 3 November 2026 until further notice.

This means empty returns will be limited according to the relevant shipping line’s operational allowance, rather than suspended entirely. The notice also cites increasing yard occupancy and critical capacity levels.

Return arrangements should be checked with the shipping line, including whether an alternative return location is required.

What Could This Mean for Your Shipment?

Although the notices specifically concern empty container returns, the restrictions could have a knock-on effect on transport schedules. Hauliers may need to adjust planned journeys or use alternative return locations, which could lead to delays and potentially additional transport costs.

The impact will depend on the shipping line, the agreed return location and the arrangements for each booking. Customers should avoid assuming that an empty container can be returned to its usual terminal without checking first.
