Businesses moving goods through the Netherlands are being advised to prepare for potential disruption as port workers plan industrial action across several major Dutch ports on Friday 4 September 2026.
Trade unions FNV and CNV have called on port workers in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Zeeland to stop ship-handling activities between 11:15 and 19:00 local time.
The planned action forms part of a wider campaign by Dutch trade unions against proposed changes and cuts to the country’s social security system.
What could the strike mean for freight?
During the planned strike period, ship-handling activities are expected to be affected across the three port areas.
According to FNV, no ships will be handled during the strike period, with activities including loading and unloading, securing cargo, towing and cargo inspections potentially facing delays.
Although the industrial action is scheduled to last from 11:15 until 19:00, there is potential for disruption to continue beyond the official strike period as affected port and terminal operations recover.
Possible impacts for freight movements could include:
- Delays to vessel loading and unloading
- Changes to vessel and terminal schedules
- Delays to container availability
- Disruption to collections and deliveries
- Knock-on delays to onward road, rail and inland transport
The exact level of disruption will depend on participation and individual port and terminal operations.
Additional activity in Rotterdam
The strike also coincides with the World Port Days in Rotterdam, taking place from 4–6 September.
The Port of Rotterdam has announced a number of local shipping and navigation measures associated with the event, including regulated shipping movements on sections of the Nieuwe Maas on 4 September.
While these measures are separate from the industrial action and do not represent a wider closure of the Port of Rotterdam, businesses with time-sensitive cargo moving through the area should be aware of the additional activity.
Planning shipments around 4 September
Importers and exporters with cargo scheduled to move through Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Zeeland on or around 4 September should allow additional lead time where possible and monitor updates from their carriers and terminals.
Businesses may also want to review vessel schedules, collection and delivery arrangements and relevant cut-off times ahead of the planned action.
