Shipping Disruptions at London Gateway Port

DP World London Gateway Port

Keeping our Beckchoice customers informed and prepared is a top priority, especially when it comes to developments that may impact your shipments.

Right now, operations at DP World London Gateway are experiencing some significant challenges. If your supply chain runs through this key UK port, here’s what you need to know about the current conditions and how we’re working to minimise disruption for your business.

What’s Driving the Delays?

Several factors are converging to create pressure on the port’s operations:

Increased Vessel Traffic and Berthing Delays

London Gateway is currently experiencing berthing delays of up to three days. This is largely due to a rise in container traffic, intensified by the introduction of the new Gemini Cooperation alliance between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk. As more vessels arrive, scheduling becomes more complex, with longer wait times for ships to dock and unload.

High Yard Utilisation

Container yards at the port are now operating at around 80% capacity, which is leading to bottlenecking. A build-up of empty containers and limited storage space is reducing operational efficiency, with vehicle turnaround times extending to 4–5 hours in some instances. This increased dwell time can affect how quickly goods can be retrieved and moved on to their final destination.

Ongoing Expansion Works

While DP World’s £1 billion investment to expand London Gateway is a positive sign for long-term growth, the short-term impact includes active construction across the site. This major upgrade includes two new berths and a second rail terminal, which will eventually increase the port’s capacity by 50%. For now, though, these works are contributing to the congestion and longer handling times.

What This Means for Your Shipments

If you’re currently routing shipments through London Gateway, it’s important to plan for potential delays and consider:

  • Longer transit and collection times
  • Occasional additional handling charges (in cases of extended storage)
  • Flexibility with delivery and scheduling windows

At Beckchoice, we’re proactively monitoring the situation, communicating closely with port officials, and making operational adjustments where possible to help offset the impact on your business.
