Belgium Strike Action: Major Disruption Expected

Antwerp Port

Belgium is currently experiencing significant nationwide disruption as a three-day general strike impacts transport networks, port operations and wider public services. The industrial action is running from Monday, 24 November to Wednesday, 26 November 2025, with all three of the country’s major union confederations participating.

Impact on Ports & Maritime Operations

The strike is having a major effect on maritime traffic in Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge.
Traffic-control and pilotage services have been heavily restricted, leaving over 60 vessels waiting offshore to enter or depart the Flemish ports.

The Sea Traffic Centre (STC) in Zeebrugge is closed from 19:30 on 24 November until 07:30 on 26 November, meaning no vessels can move through the port during this window. Limited pilotage is available via alternative routes, but capacity remains extremely reduced, creating congestion that may take several days to clear once services resume.

Terminal operators in Zeebrugge have advised that collections and deliveries of units can continue only where a confirmed vessel booking exists.

Road, Rail & Inland Waterway Disruption

The strike has also impacted Belgium’s inland and overland transport systems:

  • Rail services are running at significantly reduced frequency, including domestic intercity routes and some international services.
  • Inland waterways in Wallonia have been disrupted by picket lines at several locks and bridges, halting movements along key cargo corridors.
  • Road access to certain logistics hubs has been affected by blockades organised by unions and citizen groups.

Air Transport

Further disruption is expected on Wednesday, 26 November, as Brussels Airport prepares to cancel all departures and a large proportion of arrivals due to widespread participation by security and ground-handling staff. Charleroi Airport has confirmed its operations will also be suspended on the day.

What to Expect

Wednesday is expected to be the most challenging day of the three-day mobilisation, with wider action planned across both public and private sectors. Disruption to ports, public transport, aviation and logistics networks is likely to intensify before normal operations begin to recover later in the week.
